We invite all Elizabeth Lane families

to participate in ELE’s partnership with

Thomasboro Academy

Together with Thomasboro

Volunteer Highlights

Officially called “SchoolMates” (created to promote school-to-school partnerships), Elizabeth Lane and Thomasboro formed a special partnership in 1998. A few parents, after seeing a story in the Charlotte Observer about low test scores at Thomasboro, felt they could reach out to share their time and energy with a school in extreme need. They began with lunch buddies – volunteers from ELE visited the school weekly to have lunch and spend time with a student. Now, ELE volunteers continue to serve as lunch buddies and also read with students, assemble classroom materials for teachers, and help in the Media Center, among other activities.

Find out how to volunteer at Thomasboro:

Thomasboro is located in CMS’s Central Learning Community, near the intersection of Freedom Drive and Bradford Drive, just north of I-85. In 2011, the school was converted to pre-K through 8th grade and renamed Thomasboro Academy. The school has approximately 650 students, with nearly 100% qualifying for free or reduced lunch.

Thomasboro students still struggle on tests – and most of them struggle in their lives in ways we can only imagine. A second grade teacher at Thomasboro wrote:

“It is hard sometimes to decide which students will receive the donated food, when I know more students need it than food I have to give out. To make them stay awake during lessons, when I know that they are sleeping in a car. To read a story about a family, when I know that they are homeless. To explain to them why they need an education, so they will not end up in jobs like some of their family members.”

ELE volunteers and families give in many ways to Thomasboro. And Thomasboro gives back: gratitude, for our reaching out and caring; empathy, for showing children who have so much that not everyone is so fortunate, and a sense of community, for we are all working to improve the future.

The goal of ELE’s SchoolMates partnership with Thomasboro is to improve the students’ readiness to learn and to support the school’s environment for learning.

Thank you to all who have donated their time and energy in helping our partnership succeed!

Thank you,

Heather Herring and Bridget Cohen
